Fabric Department Policies:
Samples of any fabric may be requested. We will supply up to four samples of approximately 1/2" width free of charge. Additional samples may be requested for .50 cents each. Samples will be sent via regular mail USPS. A purchase is required prior to additional free samples.
- Full bolts purchased receive a 10% discount. Billing is made based on yardage marked on bolt by manufacturer. No additional allowances are made for shortages or flaws. If you desire us to check for flaws on full bolts, no discount will be given for full bolt purchase.
Special Projects
“Shipshewana Blessing Quilt"
This book and quilt, “Shipshewana Blessings,” is a modification of a quilt inspired by a Rebecca Haarer design. Rebecca was commissioned by the town of Shipshewana to design and make a quilt to portray the Potawatomi and the Amish, two cultures that at some point called Shipshewana their home. The blessing theme comes from desire of the original designer for those who inhabited this land and those who now live here to be remembered and blessed.
The Potawatomi culture is represented in the appliqué work in the border and the pieced center block. The Amish solid color blocks are typical of vintage Amish quilts. The tulip designs were used by both cultures.
The book/pattern features 28 pieced blocks around a center block appliqué. The border is a solid with appliqué tulips in the corners.
The book/pattern includes all of the instructions to complete the 54 ½” x 64” top.
The Kit for the quilt includes the book/pattern and all of the fabrics for the top, borders and binding (approximately 11 ¼ yards) as pictured. Backing must be purchased separately.

Yoder’s carries over 12,000 bolts of fabric including over 4,000 bolts of cotton, calico and quilting type fabrics.
Over the years we have become well known throughout the area and the country for our large and complete fabric department.
Our quilting fabrics make up the largest portion of our fabric business. Within the quilting area we specialize in calico cottons from manufacturers such as RJR, Moda, Hoffman, Bernartex, VIP, Peter Pan and Springs. We also have an enviable selection of cotton solids from P&B from which our own “Shipshewana Blessing Quilt” was created by Rebecca Haarer. We also carry a nice selection of hand-dyed fabrics, homespuns, flannels and many, many more!
The home decorating area of or fabric department includes Waverly, John Wolf and Robert Kaufman.
With the decrease in use of fashion fabrics over the past few decades it has been increasingly difficult to locate these types of fabrics. We realize this and it is precisely the reason we have chosen to continue to carry those once common place but now “hard to find” fabrics.
We also have a full bridal department, which includes satins and silks from India. We carry exquisite laces and trims embellished with faux pearls, sequins and crystals. Our bridal consultants are very knowledgeable and have been helping brides for decades.
You can still find many bolts of rayon, polyester, fine silks, velvets and linens. In addition, we regularly stock over 300 bolts of fine wools, including coating wool. Looking for 100% cashmere? We’ve got it!
Denims of many kinds populate our counters including blue, bleached and very rare “tri-blend” denim (polyester, cotton, and nylon).
As is our policy in our store, in Shipshewana you may always special order any fabric currently available from any of our current vendors. Just email your special requests to fabrics@yoderdepartmentstore.com. We will even send you free samples to help you make your choice should you not know the exact manufacture style number.
Our staff is very experienced and has over 250 years of combined experience designing and choosing fabric for quilts, garments, decorating projects, and other types of projects.
